CASE STUDY (20 Marks)


Based on Hollywood blockbuster Troy, this case study helps in studying various leadership styles. In the backdrop of the Trojan War, the case study highlights the leadership styles of the protagonists – Agamemnon, Achilles, Hector, Priam and Odysseus. While there were several leaders in the Trojan War, each with a distinct leadership style, which is the best leadership style, is debatable. For leaders in various organizations; which is the best leadership style for them? Moreover, what works best for an organization may not work for the other. Further, what defines the enduring impact of a leader – style or substance? Instances of the Trojan War captured in the case study give an introduction to the various leadership styles, provide a clue about the appropriate leadership styles for organizations and help ponder on Henry Fayol’s theory of ‘subordination of individual interest to general interest’.

CASE STUDY (20 Marks)


National Printers LTD, is a nationwide company engaged in printing and packaging industry with a market share of around 20 percent. Its corporate office at Mumbai, is a buzz with the appointment of director, personnel, Mr.Shashikant and today he’s to present his ideas in first meeting he has called. The meeting attended by three VicePresident, heads of finance, marketing and around 45 managers, started and he was called upon to present his views. Mr.Shashikant started, “my division is responsible for developing performance standards evaluation and personnel development of line managers. I want to specially focus on larger issue of developing their abilities the company has relied upon evaluation by superiors and personnel department. But may I suggest, that the performance of the manager should be evaluated by adding one more element, i.e., information obtained from their subordinates.” He added, “I propose a procedure for obtaining information on key parameters as viewed by the subordinates. The procedure is simple. Each manager and his subordinates will meet in presence of personnel trainer and discuss the concept. One trainer would then complete a question which would indicate his/her expertise, people skills, functional skills, etc. the subordinates will judge the manager on numerical scale and also provide base for such rating. The responses should be kept anonymous, if desired”. “Once all the information is received, trainers will meet managers, brief them and discuss. The purpose is to develop a plan where provisions of corrective actions, training programs and skill enhancement can be suggested”. Mr.Shashikant concluded by reaffirming that the exercise will provide valuable information and feedback and also help managers to develop themselves. He said once the offer is accepted, standards for performance shall be developed by the top management and then further steps would be taken.

Since its inception, the core values of Hermes had been craftsmanship and quality that had made the company one of the most renowned luxury brands in the world. Hermes had a fierce commitment to the quality and refinement of its products. The company claimed that one artisan fabricated each item rejecting mass production, mechanization, and assembly lines. This tradition of hand stitching was known as the company’s lifeline, having been started by its founder Thierry. With the advent of automobiles, the company’s core business of stitching saddles began shrinking. During this time, the company had to think creatively without compromising on its core values. In the 1920s, EmileMaurice traveled to meet Henry Ford in the US, where he came across the newly invented zipper that was being used on car canvas... While the Hermes family planned to carry on with its rich family heritage and keep its business independent, LVMH was secretly acquiring stake in Hermes. On October 23, 2010, Patrick Thomas was interrupted by a phone call when he was on a bike ride in Auvergne, a mountainous region in central France. ... Fearing a hostile takeover by LVMH and to protect Hermes’s family legacy, in December 2010, Thomas in association with 52 key shareholders of the Hermes family, decided to set up a holding company called H51 wherein 50.2 percent of the shares were pooled by Hermes family Though the Hermes family showed reluctance to sell its family managed business and desire members...to keep its business independent, by December 2011, LVMH had increased its stake in Hermes to 22.3 percent. This prompted Hermes on July 10, 2012, to file a complaint against LVMH with the French prosecutors... In June 2013, the AMF, after a series of investigations, ruled that LVMH be fined €10 million over its stake in Hermes (Refer to Exhibit III for investigations made by the AMF). The penalty was imposed on LVMH for breaching disclosure rules during its stake building in Hermes. ... After Thomas retired in February 2014, Axel was brought in as the CEO of Hermes. Bringing in a family member was a bid to cement the Hermes family’s grip on the company and show outsiders that the family planned to keep its business independent.

CASE STUDY (20 Marks)


After surviving from an attack on her life from Taliban, Malala intensified her efforts to fight for the Children’s rights and girls’ education. In her endeavor to achieve the objectives, she had been awarded the Nobel peace prize award for the year 2014. This case therefore focuses on the life and work of Malala and provides a discussion point on the management concepts of motivation and leadership. On December 10, 2014, Malala Yousafzai (Malala) became the youngest person and the first Pakistani to receive the


Nobel Peace Award. She received the award along with Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi . Speaking at the event, Malala described herself as a committed and stubborn person aiming to look at a world where every child would have access to quality education, every woman would have equal rights, and where there would be peace in every corner of the world. She also spoke about the passion young girls had for education in her region. She said in a simple yet strong message: “We had a thirst for education, because our future was right there in that class room, we would sit and learn and read together.” Malala had a lot of dedication and motivation towards education and believed it was a boon to all human beings, especially children.
